The writer has a clear purpose and a sense of audience in presenting a significant claim [thesis] or idea. Analytic ability, creativity, and appropriate language are evident in the paper.





The writer supports the thesis with concrete examples, details reasons why the claim is better than alternatives, and indications of the claim or idea's significance.




The writer organizes the claim and its examples, details, and alternative viewpoints so that the reader can follow as well as remain engaged.




The writer controls sentence structure, variety, and emphasis appropriate for the paper.




The writer follows current conventions in grammar, spelling, and punctuation.





The writer follows the guidelines for papers listed on the syllabus.

A copy of this rubric, filled out by the student, must be turned in with each formal essay assignment (in other words, daily journals do not require a rubric).
